Here’s how HelloFresh is helping children to improve their food-print, one ingredient at a time

HelloFresh has undergone some exciting new changes, from vibrant box updates to brand-new premium ingredients. Alongside these improvements, we’ve launched a fun, food-focussed challenge to expand kids’ taste buds and food horizons.
 
Developed in collaboration with expert nutritionist Rob Hobson, ‘60 Foods to Try Before You Turn Ten’ aims to introduce variety, encourage adventurous eating and make mealtimes more fun.
 
We’ve also created an exciting interactive poster, featuring 60 fruit and veg items, for kids to colour in once they’ve tried each ingredient.

Look out for our brand-new HelloFresh mascot, Pip, who will be cheering you on during the __60 foods to try before you’re 10__ challenge.

Gamifying healthy eating removes the pressure of mealtimes, encourages exploration, and makes food more exciting. If trying new foods can become fun instead of a battle, kids are far more likely to expand their tastes.

Rob Hobson’s Top Tips:

1. The ‘Eat the Rainbow’ Challenge
Get kids excited about healthy eating with the fun and colourful 'Eat the Rainbow' challenge! Encourage them to explore a variety of fruits and veggies throughout the week, using the HelloFresh chart to track their choices. Watch their progress come to life in a vibrant, rainbow-coloured drawing. It’s an engaging and interactive way to make nutritious eating both fun and rewarding!
 
2. Mystery Taste Test
Blindfold your child and give them a small bite of a fruit or vegetable to guess. Keep it fun and pressure-free. If they don’t like it, that’s okay! It’s all about exploration.
 
3. Food Explorer
Let kids take charge of choosing their meals to get them excited about food! Use the HelloFresh app to explore different recipes together, letting them pick a meal they’d love to try. While deciding what to choose, find a new fruit or vegetable from the recipe to learn fun facts about and prepare together at dinner time. A great way to make mealtime more adventurous and hands-on!
 
4. ‘Would You Rather?’
Give your kids fun choices: “Would you rather eat a carrot that gives you superhero vision or a blueberry that boosts your brain power?” This can spark curiosity and helps them associate food with positive effects.
 
5. Build-Your-Own Plate
Lay out different healthy options (veggies, grains, proteins) and let kids assemble their own meal. When they feel in control, they’re much more likely to eat what’s on their plate.
 
6. Funny Food Names
Rename foods to make them sound more exciting. Broccoli becomes ‘baby trees,’ chickpeas become ‘power beans,’ and sweet potatoes turn into ‘orange energy bites.’ Kids are more likely to try foods with fun names.

7. The dipping game
Let your kids experiment with different dips for veggies (hummus, guacamole, yogurt-based dips). They get to ‘test’ which combos they like best so it turns into a mini taste experiment!
 
8. Start small and stay consistent
Offer little portions of new foods alongside their favourites. Exposure is key as kids may need to see a food more than ten times before they feel comfortable trying it. No pressure, just persistence!
 
9. Pair new foods with familiar ones
Serve a small portion of a new food with something they already enjoy. For example, if they love pasta, mix in a few new vegetables rather than serving them separately.

10. Make it a no-pressure zone
Avoid using bribes or making a big deal about trying something. Instead, say, “It’s here if you’d like to try it." and let them decide. Pressure can make kids push back harder.
 
11. Let them help prepare it
Kids are more likely to try foods they’ve had a hand in making them. Let them wash veggies, stir ingredients, or choose how something is cooked. You can also buy kid-friendly utensils so they can get involved in cutting vegetables. Giving them ownership makes a difference.
 
12. Be a role model and lead by example
If kids see you eating and enjoying a variety of foods, they’re more likely to copy. Avoid negative comments like “I hated Brussels sprouts as a kid” as kids pick up on those attitudes.

13. Offer the same food in different ways
If your kids reject foods like raw carrot sticks for example then try roasting them, grating them into a salad, or blending them into soup. Kids often dislike a texture rather than the food itself.
 
14. Keep mealtimes relaxed
Make meals a positive experience. Avoid battles over food and focus on conversation. If they refuse something, don’t make it a fight and just try again another time.
 
15. Give them some control
Let kids make small choices, like picking between two vegetables or deciding on a dip for their meal. Feeling in charge makes them more likely to engage.
