Brits have maintained the cooking habits they established during lockdown
Brits have maintained the cooking habits they established during lockdown. Between 2019 and 2020, the UK has almost tripled its cooking hours. So what are we making?
With travel restrictions in place, British people are bringing home globally inspired flavours instead. Italian food continues to be the most ordered cuisine from HelloFresh in the UK, with a staggering 103,000 Google searches for ‘lasagne recipes’ every month. This hearty Italian dish is a clear favourite with Brits, towering over the 47,000 searches in second place for ‘risotto recipes’.

As well as enjoying Italian dishes at home, demand for Mexican food almost doubled in August and September 2020 compared to the same period in 2019, while orders for Thai recipes were 50% higher in August 2020.
Red vs green peppers: which do Brits prefer?
Not only are red peppers the favourite vegetable among HelloFresh customers, but recipes containing these are significantly more popular than those with green peppers.
With an increasing focus on personal health and wellbeing in 2020, Brits may be choosing the red pepper because of its nutritional benefits. Red peppers are reported to contain 11 times more beta-carotene and 1.5 times more vitamin C than green or yellow peppers.
Despite their popularity, it seems that we still need some help cooking with this veg. Every month there are 500 searches for ‘how to roast a red pepper’ and 400 searches for ‘how to cut a red pepper’.

Choice of Meat
Year-on-year, chicken remains the most popular meat choice in the UK. However, across the three-month period in 2020, the popularity of beef dishes has risen. The percentage of beef dishes delivered to HelloFresh customers in the UK was up 6.13% in July 2020, 8.79% in August 2020 and 6.56% in September 2020.
Vegetarian Recipes on the Rise
The demand for vegetarian recipes is still on the rise, albeit at a slower rate. Vegetarian dishes were up 0.45% in July 2020, 1.22% in August 2020 and just 0.04% in September.
With Google searches for some vegetarian recipes up by as much as 550%, Brits certainly haven’t grown tired of vegetarian meals just yet!

Potatoes over pasta
White potatoes are the UK’s favourite carb, as pasta seems to be loosing its place in the pantry. While the popularity of potato dishes remains high each year, pasta dishes are in decline, down -6.29% in July 2020, -3.86% in August 2020 and -9.97% in September 2020.
This is consistent with data from Google trends, which shows a steady decline in searches for ‘pasta recipes’ following its peak at the start of lockdown. Now that they’ve eaten their pasta supplies, Brits are glad to switch up their menu!
