Recipes with frozen blueberries

Blueberries offer a wonderful advantage - if you find yourself with an abundance after picking or buying too many, freezing them is a simple solution.

HelloFresh’s Recipe Development Manager, Mimi Morley, explains that in the summer, people load their smoothies, salads, and desserts with fresh blueberries while they are in season. However, during winter, frozen blueberries can serve the same purpose.

Smoothies with blueberries are the perfect morning mood-booster, and can simply be made grabbing some frozen blueberries, a banana, a tablespoon or two of Greek yoghurt and your choice of milk. Add all of the ingredients to a blender and mix until smooth. Once defrosted, frozen berries aren't as firm or fresh and they produce less juice. At this stage, they are better suited to use in baked goods or as an add-in for yoghurt. Naturally thawed blueberries can go mushy and soft, so Mimi Morley suggests placing the frozen berries in a bowl and covering them with cold water to thaw at a more constant temperature.

When are blueberries in season in the UK?

The British blueberry season typically lasts from late-June to September. During a typical UK summer, as strawberries, raspberries, and tomatoes flourish, blueberries start ripening in June and reach their peak towards the end of the month. Throughout July and August, blueberries are in season and perfect to harvest. As September approaches, blueberries reach the end of their season, making this a great time to freeze them to enjoy throughout winter.

How to grow your own blueberries

For those interested in growing blueberry shrubs at home, you'll find the process surprisingly simple, even for those with minimal gardening experience. Blueberry shrubs thrive in acidic soil and can be cultivated either in the ground or in spacious containers filled with ericaceous compost. You can find expert advice on growing, planting and harvesting blueberries over on the Royal Horticultural Society’s site.
