What is Gnocchi?
Gnocchi are a type of pasta, traditionally used in Italian recipes. Gnocchi originates in Northern Italy, where the cooler climate aided the production of high-quality potatoes, but a poorer quality of grain. Due to this regional quirk, potatoes were added to other ingredients to produce gnocchi.
Most often, gnocchi dough is made of semolina or plain wheat flour, combined with egg and potato. However, there are many varieties of gnocchi available, offering a slightly different taste and texture, due to the way they’re made; for instance, vegetables, herbs and various different cheeses are often added to gnocchi to mix up the flavour profile.
Resembling a small dumpling, gnocchi’s soft, pillow-like texture allows them to absorb flavours well, making them versatile in both light dishes and rich, hearty meals. Whether served as a main meal or a side dish, gnocchi recipes bring a satisfying and unique texture to the table.
