How to Cook a Gammon Joint
Cooking a gammon joint is simple and results in a tender, flavorful meal. Here's how:
-
Remove packaging and soak the joint to reduce salt - overnight would be best. Pat dry and score the fat in a criss-cross pattern.
-
Place the gammon in a pot, cover it with water, and bring to a boil. Simmer for 1.5-2 hours (20 minutes per 500g), skimming off any impurities.
-
For added flavour, brush the gammon with a glaze (brown sugar, honey, mustard) in the last 30 minutes of cooking.
-
Preheat the oven to 180°C. Roast the gammon for 30-45 minutes, basting with glaze until the fat is crispy.
-
Let the gammon rest for 10-15 minutes before slicing. Serve with your favourite sides or use leftovers in sandwiches.
