Rice Recipe FAQs

How do I cook rice?

How to cook rice completely depends on the type you’re cooking. For example, long-grain rice like basmati needs to be thoroughly washed before being cooked to get rid of excess starch, while brown rice needs more water to cook than white rice and takes slightly longer. With a HelloFresh box, all of the instructions you need to cook rice are on the recipe cards you receive alongside your ingredients.

Is rice gluten-free?

Yes, rice is naturally gluten-free.

How much rice per person?

How much rice per person all depends on the dish and the diet you’re following. If you’re in a calorie deficit, for example, you may want to weigh your individual rice and any ingredients you use to cook it, as fried rice calories are not going to be the same as jasmine rice calories. However, if you are not paying attention to calories, it’s usually recommended to cook around 75g of rice per person.

Why do I need to wash rice before cooking?

Washing rice, especially long-grain white rice like basmati, is important for removing excess surface starch. This step is the key to preventing the grains from clumping together and ensures you get a fluffy, clean texture rather than a sticky one. However, you shouldn't rinse rice for dishes like risotto, where the starch is needed to create a creamy sauce.

Can you freeze cooked rice?

Absolutely! You can freeze cooked rice. Here’s how: Cool your rice quickly by spreading it in a shallow container and popping it in the fridge. Once it’s completely chilled, portion it out into freezer bags. Flatten each bag to around 3cm thick, squeeze out as much air as you can, and seal it tightly. Easy peasy! Freezing rice is not only a great time-saving hack, but it’ll help you reduce your household food waste, too.

What's the difference between brown rice and white rice?

The main difference is in the processing. Brown rice is a whole grain, meaning it still has the outer bran and germ layers, which gives it a nuttier flavour, a chewier texture, and more fibre and nutrients. White rice (like basmati or jasmine) has had those layers removed, resulting in a softer, milder, and quicker-cooking grain.
