Also known as Portuguese custard tarts or locally, ‘pasteis de nata’, Portuguese tarts are known and loved for their signature flaky crust and sweet vanilla custard filling. However, if you’re looking to recreate your own at home, here’s a simple Portuguese tart recipe.

To make Portuguese tarts:
  • Preheat oven to 200°C (180°C fan assisted)
  • Roll out puff pastry and cut into small circles.
  • Place pastry circles into greased muffin tins.
  • Fill each pastry with custard mixture made of egg yolks, sugar, cornstarch and milk.
  • Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
  • Remember to allow them to cool before serving.
